Upper Frederick Township's Board of Supervisors is dedicated to preserving and protecting the beautiful rural character of the township and as such, has established a Board of Parks and Recreation consisting of 5 members who serve for 5-year terms.
To date, with the assistance of Montgomery County Open Space Program, approximately 100 acres has been preserved as township parkland. The 25 acres surrounding the Township Building at 3205 Big Road is designated as a municipal park. Phase I of the development of this park space has been completed and consists of a playground named Frederick Friendship Park, a 20-space parking lot and picnic tables. The adding of playground equipment and the installation of shade trees surrounding the tot lot is planned for the near future. In addition, a post and rail fence has been installed along the front of the municipal property, the purpose of which is to delineate the property and to protect the walking trails in this area. This fence was generously funded by donations from the local business community.

Phase II of this 25-acre municipal park development project consists of a proposed pavilion with cooking grills, a water fountain and additional picnic tables. This phase has been awarded a grant from Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR). Phase III consists of proposed paved biking/running/walking paths, unpaved walking trails and two footbridges.
The remaining parkland located between Swamp Creek, Colonial Road, Fagleysville Road and Potts Road (excluding the land owned by the Lower Merion Gun Club), has been designated for passive recreation use according to a covenant with the Open Space Board. Accordingly, walking trails, benches, a bridge over Swamp Creek, wooded areas and the preservation and expansion of existing wildflower meadows are planned for this area.
The Board of Parks and Recreation is actively involved in a variety of projects and is always looking for volunteers. A working day is scheduled on the morning of the last Saturday of every month. Please call the Township Building if you are interested in volunteering your time, money or material toward any of the projects aimed to beautify our township and create recreation areas for the use and enjoyment of all residents.
